RCOM is proud to support I Challenge Diabetes, a great Youth Summer Camp program held here in Mississauga. I Challenge Diabetes fosters a community of people with Type 1 Diabetes who, through experiential education and adventure, provide each other with the skills and confidence to overcome the daily challenges and create a new expectation for what we can accomplish.

They focus on how to manage diabetes effectively in the midst of real life challenges and use active programs to bring strategies to life.

I had the pleasure of meeting the founder, Chris Jarvis, Founder & Executive Director of ICD, former Canadian Olympic Rower and his dedicated team this summer with my friends from the Community Foundation of Mississauga. Chris was diagnosed as a kid, and didn’t have the type of support he needed with his diabetes, and would often feel alone in facing challenges related to T1D. Through trial and error, he managed to hone his skills as a rower, and went on to compete at the Olympics and various world championships. He found that even at the highest level, most coaches and trainers didn’t understand diabetes, so he mostly self-managed while trying to educate others along the way.  As the founder he has seen time and time again the impact these programs have on families who are used to feeling isolated and alone. Watching new participants interact with the ICD team make Chris proud to be the founder of this organization and RCOM is honoured to support their efforts.
